Dishing Up Food For Thought in Canada

Richmond, BC (July 17, 2014) – Nature’s Path, North America’s largest independent organic cereal company, in partnership with Syndicado and Phase 4 Films, is bringing Jeremy Seifert’s award-winning documentary GMO OMG to Canadian screens big and small, answering pertinent questions at a pivotal time in the nation’s food history.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are present in over 80% of packaged foods yet Canadians are among the minority of industrialized citizens who do not have transparency to the presence of GMOs in the foods they eat. Over 60 countries around the world have mandatory GMO labeling laws or outright bans including China, Russia and countries of the European Union.

“People should have the right to know what’s in their food, especially if it contains hidden GMOs,” says Arran Stephens, Founder and CEO of Nature’s Path. “As an independent, family-run company, we have the freedom to put our money where our heart is—which includes educating our fellow citizens on important issues that affect their health and the well-being of our precious planet.”

GMO OMG is a heart-felt and relatable journey of discovery that explores the world of genetically modified organisms through the eyes of the filmmaker’s young family. The film tackles questions of how GMOs affect our children, the health of our planet, our freedom of choice and perhaps the ultimate question: is it even possible to reject the food system currently in place, or have we lost something we can’t gain back?

Greg Rubidge, President of Syndicado, was inspired to make GMO OMG his first Canadian theatrical release after seeing it at the Berlin film festival in 2013. “It left quite an impression on me, and changed the way I looked at food and our food sources,” he notes.

GMO OMG opens at the Royal Cinema July 25TH, 2014 and will play for a week before heading on to other cities across Canada in advance of Phase 4 Film’s home video release on DVD, Video on Demand, and iTunes in September and Netflix in October 2014.
