What is flax?

Flax comes from the blue-flowered plant crop grown mainly in the cool, northern climate of the western Canadian prairies. Whole flax seeds are small brown/ black specks, similar to sesame seeds in size. They are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and fibre in flax that contribute to wellness.

What is the history of flax?

Flax has been grown since the beginnings of civilization, and people all over the world have celebrated its usefulness throughout the ages. Cultivated flax, L. usitatissimum, is of two types: one is grown for the seed and the other for fibre production. In North America, it is primarily the oilseed varieties which are produced commercially.

Historians weave the magic of flax into ancient history. Records show that the human race has eaten this seed since early times.

What are the nutritional benefits of flax?

Flax is the richest vegetable source of Omega 3, essential fatty acids our bodies need to regulate the activities of our cells. Omega -3 has been found useful in controlling high blood pressure, high cholesterol and different forms of arthritis. It is also very useful in the treatment and prevention of heart disease and cancer. Whole flax seeds do also provide valuable fiber benefits. Flax is gluten free.

How do I use flax?

Flaxseeds can be used whole or ground, sprinkled on salad or cereal, or used in baking. When ground, the nutrients are released and absorbed easier by the body. We suggest you refrigerate and ground flax.
