With less than a 2% spread between YES and NO, we are disappointed that I-522 did not pass in Washington State. The campaign took a similar course as Proposition 37 in California last year with outside investments from pesticide monopolies and multinational junk-food brands outspending the pro-labeling movement 3:1, showing the power of money and deceptive advertising. That said, there is something we’ve built that money can’t buy — a powerful people’s movement, and it cannot be stopped.
Three years ago, GMOs were barely on most people’s radar. Today, thanks to Proposition 37 and I-522, more North Americans now know about GMOs than ever before. Millions of families learned to ask legitimate questions about the health and environmental impacts of genetically engineered foods. They also learned that information is being deliberately kept from them. Of course, we would have been overjoyed with a win, but we move on to the next challenge, the next fight, until we reach the tipping point. Great causes are never won overnight.
Over 6,000,000 Californians and 800,000 Washingtonians cast their vote to know what’s in their food, and these conscious consumers cannot be ignored. Nor can the multitude of passionate voices crying out in support of these initiatives! At Nature’s Path we will continue to voluntarily label our products as Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified, giving our customers the tools they need to make informed decisions when it comes to the food they eat. The best, and safest choices both in terms of human health and the planet is to choose nutritious organic foods carefully produced without any toxic inputs including pesticides, herbicides or transgenic seeds. And that's what all of us here in Nature's Path proudly do every day, and ever since our company was founded almost 30 years ago.
We’ll continue to support federal and state labeling initiatives across the continent until everyone has the right to know what’s in their food. Thank you for everything you’ve done to bring the movement this far, we appreciate you and your continued support along our journey towards transparency for all.
